I've heard that. In fact, I think there's a story like that in Sicko.

I got a call from my insurance company about not getting preapproval for my hospital admission... for my daughter's birth. It was so ridiculous that even the insurance clerk who was assigned to call me burst out laughing.

Fry, don't be a hero! It's not covered by our health plan!

    •  Yep. I called the insurance company to object (0+ / 0-)

and the insurance clerk looked at the bill and said, "This isn't right.  It's an ER admission."

Um, yeah.  BUT is the situation resolved?  Nope.  The bill is now "under review."  We'll find out in 2 weeks -- and WE have to follow-up with THEM -- IF they will be paying for the bill.

The whole thing is insane.  Between us and my employer, we are paying this company $22,000 a year!

I say they are extortionists and scam artists.
