  •  But the written descriptions are not enough (0+ / 0-)

But if the written description of what's in those photos isn't enough for most Americans, and they must visually see the torture photos to get up off their butts, then I'm afraid our society is beyond repair.

But the written descriptions aren't enough. Trust me, we already have descriptions of the type of torture that happened leaking out of our ears. Get some of these new photos released, and it will put torture back on every nightly news program, where it belongs. We have to have the photos to make this clear to everyone what happened.

Speaking for myself, I feel that I already understood what happened, the torture that took place, by reading about it. But still, seeing the photos that have been released so far is a profound experience. If we aren't allowed to see the ugliness that happens in this world, then we have less of a chance of stopping it.

It's the difference between that photo from the Vietnam War of civilians, including a young girl who had had her clothes burned off by napalm, fleeing a village that the US had attacked, and the countless written descriptions of the atrocities that had been committed there. Photos make a big difference. The photos have to come out.

It came to me in a dream, and then I forgot it in another dream.

... on the impact of the pictures on the American public.

But the fact is, the courts said the pictures should be released.  Anyone think that the judge was a revengeful pervert who wants everyone to get off on pictures of torture or who doesn't care about the safety of the troops or the dignity of the victims?

I think the whole argument is bogus and merely a way for folks to avoid dealing with this issue -- for whatever various emotional or political reasons they have.
