  •  I am certainly not asking ... (0+ / 0-)

... Mullen to lead the charge against Rumsfeld, etc.

But statements like this, that feed the "few bad apples" defense, ah, I'm so tired of hearing that, it's just plain false.

What I would have preferred was that he would have refrained from saying this to begin with.

Now this was supposedly a sensitive memo that was leaked -- but we all know that leaked information is leaked for a reason.  I won't speculate on that reason.

At this point, my trust of those in authority is very very slim, especially when it comes to the issue of torture.  I am well aware of those brave souls in the military who did all they could to blow the whistle.  I have no idea whether Mullen was in their number.

    •  no, he can't reach Rummy, Condi, w/cheney; he can (1+ / 0-)

however -- and it appears that he is trying to do so here -- ensure that the culture of approval for torture ends.

... that "culture of approval" includes the belief that the problem was just a few bad apples.

And although I stated my approval in the diary of Mullen's wanting to re-train the soldiers, he doesn't get a pass for the statement I quoted.

I had far more criticism for the CNN article itself.  But Mullen's words were also part of the problem -- if one is really serious about ending the "culture of approval for torture."
