  •  Martha's Vineyar NAACP college scholarships (4+ / 0-)

The Martha's Vineyard High School uses the Tabernacle in Oak Bluffs for its graduation ceremony. The night before graduation they have "Senior Night", when local organizations announce the recipients of scholarships given by local organizations. Everything from the Harley Riders' Association to the Firefighter's Association to the Scottish Heritage Association and so forth. It takes hours for students to be called to the stage and handed a check (or award letter).  Some kids get called up six or seven times!

The NAACP gives out a nice scholarship  each year to two or three high school seniors who embody the values that the organization espouses.

In 1999 the only recipient was my older daughter, who was cited for her efforts to promote harmony between groups at the high school, her co-founding of a woman's shelter, initiating the local chapter of Amnesty International, etc.  In 2006 my younger daughter was one of three recipients. She was cited for her work with various groups in Haiti. Each of my daughters got, as I recall, about $2,500 from the organization.

We're European-Americans, mostly (my wife is part Cherokee).  Older daughter has blond hair and blue eyes.

It's an interesting twist to the normal state of affairs when the upper crust is African American and the "working class" is white.

We were very grateful for the money. College ain't cheap.

Wetmachine for your daily dose of technoparanoia.
