a lot. Back home we got an indepth teaching of African history and on a broader scale world history. But we hardly got the black experience. It was not until I got to Southern that I began to grasp this wealth of knowledge. I was clueless, totally clueless and it was just exciting to suck up all that stuff -- the Harlem Renaissance, the contributions of blacks, and so much more.

The first-hand stories sometimes shared by professors in class also gave me a broader outlook.

I really didn't realize now little I knew until I went there. I will always cherish that experience. It really gave a good frame of reference on life in the U.S., period.
