I feel our community is not taking the flu pandemic seriously. I'm not talking about the health risks which are at least at present, minor.  It is the economic impact that we must prepare for.  As a teacher I'm going to lose considerable income when schools close as I am an independent contractor.  So, I'm encouraging many of my students to switch to online lessons if that happens.

Each of us must plan for work disruptions that may indeed be lengthy.  I hope that our community can offer practical suggestions to those who are impacted.

I already lost my main summer job in London because the organizers of the event decided that the risk of quarantine was so great that it wasn't worth flying me over.  I had to agree with them although this means I won't be able to escape the United States for my usual working vacation in the Palin-free, birther-free comfort of the United Kingdom.

The British seem to be doing quite a good job preparing for the viral onslaught.  I am less satisfied with our own preparations, especially on the economic end.

Is it not written "There's a lot goes on we don't get told."? (Lu Tze)
