    superior beer-producing countries, but the technology - to my knowledge - has not rubbed off on them.

      especially in the north, and I think they're in the top 3 or 5 in numbers of breweries in Europe.

      They do make, however, great ciders.

        There's a store down the way a couple of miles that claims to stock 600 types of beer, I'd be happy to check them out if I know what to look for . ..

          I can only attest to having tried a few of these and they were quite good. I'm a little disappointed not to see any of the fruit laced beers from France that I've had. There was one with raspberries in it that was an absolute pleasure to consume.

            Corporation had a raspberry beer out a few years ago.

            It was, IMHO, surprising bad.  Taught me to just stick with Boston Lager.

              surprised by Sam Adams from time to time. And I have to give them credit for taking some risks. Sitting on your laurels is no way to get ahead. Sure, keep and nuture the classics, but don't forget to try new things now and again.

              fruit beers are very different from the Belgian lambic beers (not the only Belgian fruit beers, but the best, imo). It has more to do with the fermentation process of the beer itself (with or without fruit) than with what kind of fruit is added when. If that makes sense.

              Having said that, about ten years ago I really liked Pete's Wicked Winter, but it's been a long time since I tried it and don't know how I'd feel about it now.

          give them a try. In the US, French beers can end up either being very expensive or having gone skunk - they don't have the same cultural cache as Belgian, German, or British beers, so people tend to avoid them.

          Anything from the La Choulette brewery, especially (imo) the blonde.

          Fischer makes some nice beers.

          And Castelain.

          Those are just a few. I'm lucky to (currently) live in the UK with a sweet little off-license down the road that stocks great continental beers, but I think you might be able to mail order some of these in the US as well.
