  •  Valid tho. (4+ / 0-)

There's an impulse to glamorize Corrie's death and ignore the fact that the ISM is notorious for promoting exactly this kind of situation and then using it to score political points when the naive student types they send into those situations get hurt or killed.

    •  Yeah, like the NAACP was notorious for sending (6+ / 0-)

civil rights workers to their deaths. It's always the fault of the non-violent protestors when they get beaten, shot, gassed or run over--look at the Greens in Iran. Damn those naive student types!

I never liked you and I always will.

When the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) organized "naive student types" to confront the violence of the Southern white power structure in places like Mississippi they were widely accused of precisely this sort of recklessness to "score political points."

Its certainly one way of looking at things. Its a way of looking at things that is fundamentally cynical about the capacity of young people to really dedicate themselves to a fight for justice and equally cynical about the prospects of overcoming injustice.

The people I've known who have participated in work with the ISM were not at all naive about the real prospect of getting hurt or killed. Every single one of them was scared to death but determined not to let that fear overpower their determination to confront injustice. They understand that the IDF kills people all the time and their hope is that if they are hurt or killled people who otherwise ignore those killings might be forced to really confront what is being done to the Palestinians. The world we live in today would be a much uglier place without people willing to make that sort of commitment.

Rachel Corrie was young and passionate in her beliefs, but I have seen no evidence to suggest that she was naive or unaware of the risks she was taking or that anyone pushed her to take risks she wasn't willing to take. Rachel Corrie was committed to the radical idea that Palestinian lives are worth as much as anybody elses.
