Your post struck a couple chords with me.  In my years of performance, I have presented and endured many programs similar to that which you describe so well.

We each have the talents we were given.  Sometimes hard work can improve upon those enough to be pretty good.  The chances for "making it big" are numerically no better in music than in sports, however it is possible to make it in music with a less than full load of talent.  There are legions of popular "artists" that attest to this fact.  Sports, not so much.

I was fortunate to have had more than a few kids who had real possibilities, but I never suggested that they could make a living making music.  They could make some money, music could open some doors for them, and I encouraged them to pursue their music, but the odds that they'd get a recording contract in their lifetime were pretty much nil.  Given all that, music could and ought to be a thing that would enrich every student's life.  It can improve brain function and just make life sweeter.  In that respect, every one of my kids is the star of his/her own show.

I enjoyed your irreverent description of your experience as a jazz singer.  I've known you, several times over through the years, and I wish you good luck and a great life!  :-)
