Joe was too soon gone.  I enjoyed his works.

    •  Grinnell was as famous in his time ... (7+ / 0-)

      ... as John Muir.
He was editor of Field & Stream, and founder of the Boone & Crockett Club.
His writings aren't so well known anymore, and not too many are even in print.

On one trip out west in 1876 he was going to meet a family friend in the Dakotas, but was late in arriving, and his host rode away without waiting for the famous journalist.
Next thing he heard, George Armstrong Custer was killed at the Little Big Horn.

Who knows what would have happened to what is now a National Park if Grinnell had kept his appointment with Custer?

... public service is a privilege. It's not about advantaging yourself, it's not about advancing your friends or your corporate clients.
