    Today's equivalent of phlogiston. There must be something accelerating the universe, we just don't have a good answer yet.

    Interesting though, is the fact that the space between stars in galaxies isn't expanding, only the space between the galaxies themselves.

      Observations show that our nearest neighbor galaxy, Andromeda, is accelerating towards our galaxy, with penetration forecast in what is to us the distant future.  Gravity works over quite a good distance, and it holds us together pretty well.

      The difference is in trying to decide what are local effects and what are effects on a universal scale.  I am not sure that we are sophisticated enough to do that yet.

      The red shift is certainly a real phenomenon, but I have always wondered if something in addition to the Doppler effect augments the appearance of it.
