    but skepticism has an end, beyond which it becomes gullibility.

    Lincoln was assassinated by a conspiracy (Booth at least talked to some folks about it). That means you should take a second look at the attempt on Reagan -- but not a 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th look as well.

    It's plausible that a random bureaucratic note ostensibly from the '60s regarding attendance could be forged -- it's implausible to posit a wide-ranging conspiracy over 40 years and half the planet to forge a place of birth (without a peep!)

      And this is well beyond scepticism. I think that they think that past media errors provides them cover for their lunacy.

        The followers don't think that the media errors give them cover -- they do think it justifies their lunacy.

        The more cynical leaders -- well, you've got it on the money. They don't believe in the "birther" nonsense -- but they do believe they can get away with it because of past errors.
