    Also, while using something you have been taught really ingrains it in your head and is a great idea, teaching it does too, as in student teaching or tutoring.  But even absent the ideal, teaching ideas in the abstract is a good idea.  Ideas, generally, are good.  Logic is good.  Learning different ways of approaching problems is good.  Saying that something shouldn't be taught because most people never use it day to day misses the point that they may well use what they learned in learning the topic day to day, and it may help them enormously, even if they don't use the actual topic.
