what a magnificent choral composer Rachmaninoff is.  Beautiful, beautiful stuff.

Question for you:  does your perfect pitch work both ways?  Can you hum a note without reference, AND identify any note/chord played on the piano?

You play me an A, I can tell you it's an A.  You ask me to hum you an A, I can hum you an A.

I never quite understood what was so unique about it when I was young.  My teacher told me what the notes were when I was 5.  She simply said, "This is an A," "This is a E flat," etc.  I just remembered them.

when someone plays or sings a half-tone off?  Or have you learned to live with that?

It bothers me most when singing.  For some reason, being a half-tone off in voice has always irked me more than making mistakes on the piano.  Probably because I can relate so well to making mistake after mistake on the piano for years, and also because most tuned piano keyboards have a definite tone for each key, whereas the voice has all different sorts of shades of gray in between each note.

I've mostly learned to live with it, though.  I go to concerts all the time where I'll notice mistakes and completely miss others, but it usually doesn't bother me that much.
