  •  Entitlement is just another word for "right" (6+ / 0-)

The truth about a right is that it can't exist unless someone else respects and honors it--a condition that even a reasoned denial can achieve.

For example, the Bill of Rights is actually an enumeration of human behaviors that the agents of government have an obligation to respect, unless there's a good reason not to--i.e. for the greater common good.

This is actually the conundrum the Obama people are wrestling with in regards to the detainees whose right to liberty is guaranteed, unless there's good reason to impose restraints.  We actually do that pretty regularly when people who are found to be a danger to themselves or others are confined to a psychiatric facility in protective custody.

The Bush/Cheney strategy of creating an endless war in order to justify locking people away indefinitely just won't do.  Of course, now that some of the detainees have been tortured to within an inch of their lives and bereft of their senses, some may well be candidates for confinement in rehab facilities.  Imagine the ruckus that would cause.  That we have to provide psychiatric care for people who our psychologists helped to drive mad.

How do you tell a predator from a protector? The predator will eat you sooner rather than later.
