    Morning all!
Good diary, Tom but you missed the most vital part---how to get  someone to do it for you  Thats the  reallly skillfull part. (It helps to be a good looking girl here)
Its actually really timely for me because by the end of this yearr, if I live that long, I'll be installing not only a new GDO but a new GD as well.
Ive been living for 4+ years now with a GD thhat looks so crappy I want to put a bag over my head when people come here (Solution: keep it open)

When I almost died in June and my wife saved my life, I swore I'd get her a new airconditioning unit (lrrps ar the last true romantics) So after a due period of procrastination, it got done last week and it  was also very timely--just before the record breaking heat wave we just went through started and all the stores sold out of AC units. It was over 100 for 4 days in a row, broke records here in OR
Yes, I know about  carbon footprints but when a woman saves your life and hates heat above 95 there's only one thing for a gentleman to do.
I won't say it saved our marriage but it turned an itchin' for bitchin' into an attitude of gratitude.
I didn't put one in my bedroom yet because heat doesn't bother me like  it does her ((I lived in Chico, CA for many years)

Now, this was just a window unit but as you can see, there is some customization to it: I had to fit it into a sliding window, which the directions say couldn't be done.
I had to cut a piece of plywood to fit into the  window and a hole big enough for the AC unit. and add some other features. Its made to come ot i the fall and re-install easy.
It workked so well, I spent the hot days in her room, reading ((its a sitting room plus loft)and watching PGA on the teevee

Sorry - I can't be eco-correct either, but I'm too old to live like I was 20 again. My BP med probably saved my life (a few times in the last year my systolic topped 200 when stressed!), but it makes me sweat like all hell broke loose, so we have not one, but TWO window units in our little house - one up and one down. They're both small and don't quite give us optimum cooling, but if I can just drop the ambient to 8 or 10 less than exterior temp on hot days I can get thru without showering and changing clothes 5 times.

Ladies - your hot flashes got nothin' on mine! Actually, we BOTH get them - wanna see an older couple bail from bed at 3 am, change all the bedding and then go sit in the 3 season in their skivvies? Just synch our hotties, grab a cold one, and enjoy the "show" - we sure don't!
