  •  PBS had a series (5+ / 0-)

in the 70's or 80's, The Voyage of the Beagle, if I remember correctly.  I just loved that series, which was my first introduction to Captain FitzRoy.  What an incredibly interesting story.  Thanks for filling in so many details.

How did this sad ending come to Captain FitzRoy?  Could it be from trying to be someone he wasn't, and not being true to his own thoughts?  Darwin had similar problems with not wishing to offend his wife and family, but dealt with it differently.  It makes me think of people I know who have become religious dogmatists, when their earlier life was so different. What happened to them?

seems to have been restricted (more or less)by disapproving, conservative family members.  I'm reminded of Mark Twain's disapproving wife and daughters who thought his rather insipid work on Joan of Arc was his best. (Twain wouldn't allow his most ferocious satire, written with a "pen warmed up in hell," to be published until after his death.)

It makes me think of my peers in the late 1960's, early '70's who were intellectually and spiritually outraged by the immorality of U.S. corporatism; the ownership of the U.S. government by Corporate America; the militarism of the U.S. conscience, economy and foreign policy; the profound inequities generated by capitalUStism; the ecocidal agressiveness of industrialization; the lemming-like mentality and consequences of mindless consumerism; the hypocrisies of organized religions; the conscious self-absorption pervading the nation; the egregious wastes of a materialist society; the window dressing of the American Dream disguising the contents of the Global Nightmare; and...and, too little has evolved for the better, too much has become worse, little that was good has stayed the same.

My peers of decades past, what happened to them? Was the seemingly boundless sphere and limits of human consciousness irrevocably crushed to two dimensions, made into a flattened world of the monotonous ideology of "The 'American' Way or no way at all" ?

Sure there are those who say "ugh...so pessimistic", but the above observations are just that, they are observations.
