  •  against absolutism (0+ / 0-)

in discussing Darwinian evolution can be dangerous on this site, thanks to the politics of being either for or against it, "for science" or "against science" thanks to the terms set by the Christian right.  But there is only a prevailing interpretation of Darwin's theory of natural selection, and a healthy debate within the sciences on that interpretation.  The gradual versus punctuated equilibrium debate is just one.  There are others involving microbiology, observation of altruism in animals, etc.  Richard Dawkins no longer has the dogmatic last word.

So I'm happy to see a popular diary advocate against absolutism on the topic.  An interesting read as well.

As for the voyage of the Beagle and Darwin's development, I recommend a book new this year, THE YOUNG CHARLES DARWIN by Keith Thompson (Yale.)
