  •  Will be doing the same next two weeks (3+ / 0-)

Taking my kids farther north in Michigan, to the Upper Peninsula. Going to roam around in woods, brooks and fens and on beaches outside Marquette like I did as a kid. My son is an avid bird watcher; I'll risk some nasty bug bites to get him out to our secret spot to watch for birds along with beavers and turtles. And I'll take my daughter berry picking; the wild red raspberries and thimbleberries should be in now. She's like a bear, will eat as many in the woods as we get to the house to make jam.

We'll be thinking of you! I'll try to take some pics to share with you at Netroots if you're going to be there.

    •  arriving in Pittsburgh midday Wednesday (2+ / 0-)

Leaves on the Current, miss SPED

staying until Sunday afternoon.  Staying a few blocks away at the Hilton, for about 1/2 the cost - important on a teacher's budget.  Look forward to seeing your pics.

do we still have a Republic and a Constitution if our elected officials will not stand up for them on our behalf?

      •  Me, too! (0+ / 0-)

The pics, I mean. I hope perhaps tk can find a way to share them with me also, if that's okay with you, Rayne.

And Rayne, you are so right about the role of media-induced fear, by the way.  And parental guilt, duly manipulated.  Thanks for making those points.

As for Michigan woods: when I was a teenager (in the '70s), my family spent several vacations in a rural area of southwestern Michigan (St. Joseph's County): so though I don't know the beautiful northern Michigan woodlands of which Ken has such fond memories, I do have very fond memories of the gentle woodlands and fields of the region I was privileged to wander a bit.  Every summer, especially, I remember them with gratitude--and nostalgia.
