    Life, Inc. by Douglas Rushkoff. Broader than just technology, but also about forces which push to destroy mundane human interactions -- like family -- with bells and whistles.

    Living in the country and in a state (Vermont) that is somewhat less "normal" helps.

    I'm hoping my daughter grows up to be a busker (we tell her to take it seriously, since she can always go to Europe and play on the street and get free pints in Ireland, which is way more likely than mom and dad taking out a second mortgage to send her to college and study abroad).
