  •  Yup (6+ / 0-)

    we have little hope of reaching 350 ppm if we're at an official 380 and the number's expected to double within my lifetime.

    •  We are nearly at 400 ppm and we need to get to (8+ / 0-)

      250 ppm to break the positive FB loop we've already started.

      Little hope = impossibility.

      It's not going to happen.

      •  And increasing natural gas use is what Pickens is (7+ / 0-)

        really pushing. It's great that he's also advocating for developing wind energy. But it's hard not to suspect that this oil and gas man is really out to exploit natural gas, and he's poured millions into promoting the Pickens Plan:

        There are several pillars to the Pickens Plan:

        * Create millions of new jobs by building out the capacity to generate up to 22 percent of our electricity from wind. And adding to that with additional solar generation capacity;

        * Building a 21st century backbone electrical transmission grid;
        Providing incentives for homeowners and the owners of commercial buildings to upgrade their insulation and other energy saving options; and

        * Using America's natural gas to replace imported oil as a transportation fuel in addition to its other uses in power generation, chemicals, etc.

        While dependence on foreign oil is a critical concern, it is not a problem that can be solved in isolation. We have to think about energy as a whole, and that begins by considering our energy alternatives and thinking about how we will fuel our world in the next 10 to 20 years and beyond.

        •  Besides which, there is the other nasty fact (5+ / 0-)

          Behind every wind farm used for generating electricity for the grid is a natural gas plant that can generate the amount of kwhr of electricity the wind generators are committed to supply to the grid.  There is nothing, absolutely nothing, that keeps the company that owns the windfarm from running those natural gas generators any time that it is economically favorable for them to do so.

          As far as GWG emissions are concerned, natural gas was never that great even without leakage.  Its advantage is that it is lower in particulate emissions and sulfur compound emissions than coal.  CO2?  It's no good.  Leakage?  As the diarist says, freaking horrible.

          Check page 2 of this report.

          It is a heck of a lot worse than wind, nuclear, most hydroelectric, biomass, and most solar, when the full life cycle of the energy source is considered.
