    I was in West Texas in January and saw several wellheads flaring. I couldn't believe it, since flaring has been banned in the US since the 1970s. Although it was midday, the air was so thick, I had to get within smelling distance before I could see the flares, so it went on for several hours at least.

    I saw it once before in a few years back in the Permian Basin and I suspect the companies are taking the "pay the fine if you get caught" approach. That blossomed during shrub's administration, when EPA enforcement dropped to zero, but I'd like to know 1) if it is still going on and 2) why the people who live in that mess don't complain.
