    ...is that Americans need to acquire some sophistication about public cost and relative harm.  We treat social aid as a moral issue in every case, and hold it up to standards of calvinist conduct and "charity", rather than considering that the commonweal has it's inefficiencies and disagreements, and always will.  It is better -- when the cost of compliance is modest -- to do what is kind and appropriate and humane.  When the cost is higer, the equation becomes more difficult.  Every system of univeral care faces these issues.  Indeed, we face them now but they are hidden behind the private facade of insurance companies.  If America has to face them, we will need to grow the hell up.  Should be interesting.
