But the general idea -- the broader appeal -- is that things of modest cost in the big scheme, which have real benefits for people, are OK.   One will not agree with every service offered, but the tradeoffs aren't based on that individual agreement, but agreement vs cost.  Everyone should, ideally, have access to MRIs.  But the number of people that would apply to (basically everyone) is huge, and it wouldn't (at this stage of the technology) work very well: the system would go broke.  Only a handful of people will be going in for gender reassignment.  Whether it is supported or not will have a bearing on how that community -- with a mindboggly high AIDS rate, major issues with simple medical access of any kind, and so on...have or do not have entree into both medical care and society.  So even if you don't get it, or agree with it all that much...it offers some benefits at relatively low cost.  I think we'll need to step back on a lot of things -- not just trans issues -- and ask whether it makes sense to just cover it and hope for the best, or if we should deny it.  I hope as a country we'll exercise some common sense, rather than treating each thing as a "welfare queen" type issue.

...j'ai découvert que tout le malheur des hommes vient d'une seule chose, qui est de ne savoir pas demeurer en repos dans une chambre.
