President Obama's election shot a large hole in white privilege.  Health care reform with a public option, especially if coupled with serious banking reform, would shoot large holes in wealth-based privilege.  Some of this is not mere diversion.  Violence in the defense of privilege has, sadly, a long history in the United States.

of what you say. I guess the word I'm suggesting is manipulation rather than merely diversion. The people making the loudest noise aren't particularly privileged - particularly socio-economically. If you take a close look at the audiences in those town hall meetings, these are people who have been left behind.

The majority are the elderly who, even if they believe they are middle class, are actually in the realm just above that of the working poor. I'd be willing to wager a socialist, military retirement check that these people are one paycheck away from poverty and not because of over-leveraged lifestyles. They are as looked down on as any brown-skinned citizen by the truly wealthy and middle-classed and are simply fighting for the scraps. Their competition is indeed the "illegals" and "those people" but they are undereducated and incurious enough to be manipulated by the genuine money changers against that which is best for them.

They're simply clinging bitterly to a notion that they are somehow better than or privileged, when in fact they're just better off rats in a mouse world scrounging the low end of the garbage heap while the fat cats sit back and count the Benjamins.

"Being ignorant is not so much a shame as being unwilling to learn." - Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) American statesman, scientist and philosopher.
