    if we mandate coverage and keep the private insurers on a short regulatory leash. Such systems work quite well in France and Israel, to name two countries.

      It's just plain sad when we do it.

      Funny enough, I'll use the same argument I once used regarding wireless wiretapping.

      Fine. Obama's in charge. He says we're going to regulate the insurance industry, the regulations will actually have teeth, and they'll be enforced.

      What happens when we get the second coming of W? Think HE'S going to continue to enforce those regulations?

      A public option cements something in place that, like Medicare and Medicaid before it, will be REAL hard to fuck with, without pissing off a great many voters.
