    at GOTV for the props. We've never figured out how to do that nearly as well.

    If we had that kind of infrastructure -- something similar to what they have through churches, say -- we'd be in much better shape for low to moderate turnout midterm elections.

      than we are. Mostly because they crave leaders. Their protestations not withstanding, independence isn't really that important to them; they do as they're told. Our challenge is to engage based on our strengths, not on theirs.

        I was referring more to organization, really. I'd not like to see us march in lockstep, but I would like to see some serious coalition building for messaging and GOTV on local and state issues as well as national ones. I will admit that I envy their ability to get their voters to the polls over every hot-button proposition, and I don't think that all of it is about being followers. I think they also have a constant infrastructure for moving money and people on "smaller" issues.

        infrastructure, too, which they exploit shamelessly and then don't pay taxes on because it's a "church."
