Republicans are opposed to anything public because they, rightly, understand that public equals equality and equality negates a stratified society--i.e. with some people on top calling the shots, hoarding all the money and expecting all the lower strata to lavish them with gratitude.

Public means that the people govern and that the agents of government, our public servants, are mandate to follow the public's directives.

It's our choice.  It's what the public option is about.  If there's not unanimous agreement that popular government is good, that's because some people really prefer following directions to telling others what to do.  On the other hand, some of the controversy around the "death panels" may reflect the belief held by some people that they'd prefer to have end-of-life decisions made by an impartial body, rather than leave it to nephew Milty or brother John.  Some people don't trust their kin-folk to do right by them.

Would you trust Dick Armey if you were related?

How do you tell a predator from a protector? The predator will eat you sooner rather than later.
