consent is coerced, if not by the threat of force, then the need to choose the lesser of two evils.

We have a perfect example in the "all-volunteer" military in which individuals sign up because there are fewer and fewer civilian opportunities.  Then, once they're in, the troops are expected to obey orders without question and being expelled for "insubordination" leaves them worse off than when they went in.  The recruits are in a situation that's best described as "voluntary servitude" with virtually no respect for their individual rights and their concerns are easily dismissed with, "well, they volunteered."  Then, when it becomes convenient, this voluntary servitude is transformed into the involuntary kind with the stroke of a pen to "stop loss."

The U.S. military is increasingly made up of slaves.  If we don't notice it's probably because we've been led to assume that slavery is exemplified by unpaid labor.  That's really not the case.  Slavery is characterized by the fact that the individual is not free to simply pick up and leave a particular location.

On the other hand, the military situation should not be all that surprising since, in the conservative universe, the ballot box is merely a mechanism for people to select their own jailers.
Why are some of them so condescending?  Because they are convinced that to be questioned is to be subject to insolence.

How do you tell a predator from a protector? The predator will eat you sooner rather than later.
