Blue Dogs Bite, Unions Bite Back

Today, it's my honor to turn this space to Sheet Metal Workers (SMWIA) General President Mike Sullivan, leader of one of the first unions to publicly state the union is pulling all support from the Blue Dogs because of their efforts to kill real health care reform.

The blue dogs need to realize that they can't throw the people who knock on doors and lick the envelopes and make the phone calls to get them elected under the bus and still expect to have our support.  We are not going to continue to suffer from this battered partner syndrome.  Enough!  We understand that the blue dogs come from tough districts.  But there are going to be a few issues on which they have to stick with us and deliver the votes for the American people.  And there is no issue more crucial than health care.

our expanded majority, and the expanded progressive strength in the caucus, makes.  Before, we tolerated their antics because we needed them for a majority.  Now, we don't anymore.  It's as simple as that.

for a majority?  I agree that with a push (and a final health care reform bill) they'll vote for it, but we definitely do need them for a majority - even a 51-vote majority in the Senate.
