Finally, some electoral analysis that looks deeper into what's going on rather than simply pretending that American politics are a zero-sum game.  GOPers have made many poor bet recently and raising the volume with no platform to fall back on is just another short term gain, long term disaster.  It makes all the difference in 2010 (and 2012) what the voters have to vote for, rather than against.  In traditional 'post-war' cycles this may have worked, but times are much harder and more desperate now, not conducive to large scale negative voting.  People want solutions, want action, want a way forward, a better looking future.  Democrats may not have all the mechanics down, but they are clearly trying.  And the Rubs?  No policy in sight.

Added to this historical view, is the fact that all this hubbub is happening now, not in 2010, so how will things look then?  No one can be sure, but Obama is playing the GOP and taking them at their word.  He may be being far too passive on health care policy, but he is wise as ever to let the GOPers and their surrogates yell as loud as possible, because when it is all over, the impression will be they have added nothing at all to solving our nation's problems. This does not bode well for them.
