    Thank you for bringing this up, I just learned something.

    I suppose I always accepted the enlightenment / modernism take on Nazism because it fits so well with the "visuals" - the architecture and design of the era.  Stupid of me, but there you go.

    I still think that John Gray has a point.  Enlightenment Humanism has the same narrative as Christianity - deliverance of mankind - that lies at the heart of puritan fantasies like Nazism.  Humanism claims to be universal, but in reality someone has always been excluded, used as a counterpoint and a contrast and requiring either education or "correction": women, non-europeans, slaves, the Irish...

    But clearly, characterizing Nazism and the Shoah as simply an excess of modernism just doesn't cut it.
