    is the type of self-description I've come to think of as vague and safe, what people say to avoid controversy since it's probably how the majority of Americans would describe themselves, if asked, and it leaves open a lot of room for interpretation. "Fiscally conservative" might simply mean you think government should be cautious about debt (as Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush were not), or it could mean you hold economic views in line with those of the GOP. "Socially conservative" can mean anti-abortion, anti-gay-rights, but it can also simply mean a general belief in things like two-parent families and church attendance, etc.
