outside of a broad appreciation for history's ironies.

Remember, the scientific, educational, and economic situation at the turn of the 20th century was vastly different than it is today. The nature of the world as we know it today was not then widely realized. Michaelson-Morley's experiment too place at the same time as the first Chatauqua movement. Who had ever heard of Ernst Rutherford or Michael Faraday? Einstein's was a work in progress when the early  progressive movement was coming together.

Most of the world went to bed with the chickens because candles and lamp oil was dear, and there was no electricity. It was an era when horsepower was a term that most Americans knew intimately. If they didn't live on a farm, they had likely grown up on one, and if they were well-to-do, they likely still had family "back home" tending the holding.

For their time, they were cutting edge. It was brave.

Too many books, too little time. . . .
