    liberal v conservative is much starker. (And scarier.)

    •  Both words have vague enough origins (0+ / 0-)

      to mean just about anything. "Liberal" can mean, depending on the context, open, free, tolerant, or copious, not to mention all the political meanings. "Conservative" when used outside a specific partisan context still overwhelmingly has the meaning of resistance to change, and a valuing of the past or established traditions--a connotation that modern-day conservatives have attempted to suppress but not eliminate.
