Short answer: removing the mountain requires fewer people but is more dangerous than traditional mining.

Long answer: check out some of the resources on Ilovemountains dot org's FAQ page.

      NO. NO. NO.

You have to destroy resources including water which is increasingly in short supply and essential for existence.  Strike 1.

You have to transport the coal after you have destroyed the resources. Strike 2.

You have to either increase greenhouse gas emissions and other toxic waters (sulfurites, arsenic, mercury, etc...) or engage in very expensive trap processes that negative the "cheapness" of the energy source. Strike 3.

      Forget coal.

PS. Not one mountaintop removal site has EVER been restored. Strike 4.

    •  That's a Repulican lie. Surface mining isn't (7+ / 0-)

significantly safer if proper safety practices are used in underground mining.  Surface mining is also horribly environmentally destructive compared to underground mining.  They only reason surface mining is practiced at all is that it's cheaper for corporations.  The Republicans have been spreading the lie that surface mining is safer (because it's cheaper for corporations), but the facts don't support that claim.

        That's what RLMiller said.

...we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals.
