    •  Tipped to offset HR's (5+ / 0-)

though this diary lacks substance, it makes a valid point. People in Sri Lanka are being ethnically cleansed. Though I don't need to watch the video to know this, I am glad someone is taking up the cause of the defenseless.

before the update to make this anything other than violence porn.

Now least it's violence porn pretending to be something else.

Still not enough to get me to tip, precisely because it doesn't "take up the cause of the defenseless".

          You know?

          It's reality.

You can ignore it or you can face it. And hopefully help do something about it.

But to simply call it "violence porn" and dismiss it is simply beyond my sense of justice.

          •  Look, there's lots of ugly reality all around (0+ / 0-)

why not try analyzing some of it, see what kind of response a diary gets.  It will be better than a link to a video of a summary execution, I'm sure.  Your link might as well be to some corpses in a motor vehicle accident.  We all know such things occur already.

          •  It's quite simple. (0+ / 0-)

Go re-read the diary, the pre-update part of it.

You only talk of violence, and the video of it. The only part of the linked video you talk about is the most gruesome part.

In short, your story gives absolutely no indication that we should be interested for any other reason than to go see someone get shot in the head.

People being shot in the back of the head while naked and zip-tied.

Really can't add much to that.

Maybe you could've added some background on who the Tamils are, why they took up arms, the Sinhalese response, the methods the Tamils used, the large numbers of civilian casualties on both sides, the relationship to the Tamil population on mainland India. You know, why we should care about the conflict. You could've mentioned the 280,000 internally displaced people being treated like detainees by the government. Then maybe you could've added some pointers on how to help. You could've directed people to MSF or Amnesty or Oxfam, for example.

Don't just make it about watching someone getting shot. That is violence porn.
