"heard tell" about for a long time but have never understood who the good guys are and who the bad guys are (it's probably a mix).  But I'd like to know more.  Probably alot of us here in that boat.  You've obviously followed it for a long time.  I'd suggest [who am I to suggest, but here goes] that you leave this diary as-is, and spend some time researching and writing a diary that gives us/me more history/insight/depth on the issue.  It needs someone who is passionate about it.

I thought they "declared victory" or something in this deal a couple months ago.  Gee, we Americans are provincial.

        •  There weren't any good guys (0+ / 0-)

Just bad guys doing bad things to each other.

The Sinhalese had slightly less excuse because they are the majority, they control the government, and it was a standing army committing atrocities against the Tamils.

But the LTTEs deliberately target civilians whereas the army just didn't give a damn (at the end, the Tigers used civilians as human shields, and the army kept shooting & bombing anyway). The LTTE also recruited child soldiers, and blew up politicians, both Sri Lankan and Indian - it was the LTTE that murdered former Indian PM Rajiv Ghandi (not related to Mohandas Gandhi, but he was the grandson of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of a free India, who's often considered the father of the nation).

This year, the Sri Lankan army captured the town that the LTTE had been using as their operating base. Most of the leadership of the LTTE has been either killed or arrested, leaving them currently without a recognized leader. So, it's fairly accurate to say that they've been defeated. That doesn't rule out the possibility of continued violence, however.
