are running a solid 2 generations behind in understanding who the right are and what they're engaged in and where.

Some days I think it'd be better long term for the activist community to stop engaging not only the wingnuts but also independents and moderates and the media.

to inspire fear and hysteria in the public. They've been doing this since the 1950s, if not earlier.

This is the latest version of the Red Scare - "the commies are going to put fluoride in the water"!

McCarthyism never died, it went into hibernation for a decade, and Pat Buchanan revived it, taught it to his acolytes Lee Atwater and Karl Rove. I agree, why Democrats cannot see this clearly is beyond my understanding.

I can't understand why they continue to pretend the GOP doesn't.  It makes political progress all but impossible to achieve.

It is scarcely possible to conceive of the laws of motion if one looks at them from a tennis ball's point of view. (Brecht)

The upper class wants more money and power for themselves.

They use various forms of fear to motivate the middle and lower classes to go along with them.

This is particularly easy since biologically we are equipped to do fear mode with relatively little provocation (natural selection advantage: start running before the bear starts chasing you).

The result puts us at a disadvantage, since fear moves with the speed of panic through a crowd but reason moves like molasses on a cold day.

The way to overcome this is by promoting emotional states that are neurophysiological antidotes to fear:  love and humor.

Once you get people out of the emotional state of fear, you can reason with them.

That's how we're going to win.
