    parents in this situation. My mother was cut from the same cloth. She knew nothing about her finances when my father passed away. She didn't want to learn either. It was much better being the eternal optimist and telling us kids that everything will be fine. We finally had to sit down and have a family meeting with her and do an intervention of sorts. We basically told her that she needed to change her lifestyle because we wouldn't be able to support her when her money was gone. She was crestfallen and heartbroken. I think it had more to do with her unshakable belief that my dad would NEVER have left her in that kind of position, so she simply lived in denial. No one wants to see a parent have their self-esteem destroyed by forcing them to face facts, but it's better than the alternative.
