    Rope (kamilos) was confused with camel (kamelos).

    It's my guess, that over time "camel" became the favored translation for the Christians who are poor, as in, "It is impossible for a rich man to get into the Kingdom of God". Whereas, the rich Christians preferred "rope" as in, "It is difficult but doable for a rich man to get into the Kingdom of God"
