It describes building and then flying an Orion Nuke based spaceship.

One of my favorite lines describes people in a shelter, a few miles away, when the thing takes off. It's a secret, so it's a surprise to them...

WHAM..WHAM..WHAM "It sounds like God is knocking, and he wants in REAL BAD!" (The quote is from memory, but I hope it is close enough to capture the spirit..)

And it could move a massive load to orbit, as the writer described it, the load would smooth out the ride....

book, also Lucifer's Hammer if you're looking for a great read about a comet impact. Too bad Niven is a right-wing pampered heir to an oil fortune. There was a huge falling out between UK sci-fi writers like Clarke, and the US icons like Heinlein and Niven over ideology a few years ago. I wonder what Heinlein would make of the religious right now?

Obviously without the continuous blinding pulses of light.

Was a big dome, with a "Brick" on the top, mounted on BIG shock absorbers and springs.

        Nice picture!

        •  The pushplate (0+ / 0-)

was to have huge shock absorbers, was to be made of metal, with a thin layer of oil or grease sprayed on it between explosions to minimize ablation.  The handling of hundreds of atom bombs of graduated sizes was to be done with designs adapted from coke machines.  Each bomb was to be jacketed with plastic which when vaporized provided driving mass to push against the plate.

If I remember my McPhee correctly.
