The GOP is really going to suffer for catering  to their crazy base.  They have come completely untethered from the business community as a whole, except for eccentric execs and banksters.  Ordinary business people, managerial types who value competence and entrepreneurs and small business heads who face serious health care issues saw Obama as a serious problem solver and the GOP as whiny children sitting on their hands untethered from reality.

There was a guy on CNBC this morning who had done a poll of business people and he said that a large majority supported reform because health care costs were a major concern for them.  Small business owners are themselves forced into the individual market, in addition to coverage for employees being priced too high.  He said the survey showed strong support for the health exchanges and even a majority for the public option.  Again, it's not just that they want to off-load their employees' costs, they want it for themsleves.

Employer coverage is declining in the economic recession, and I doubt it is coming back.  If there is a scalable public or not-for-profit option, even if it has a trigger, it could be in great demand by the time it comes on-line, leading to expansion.  For-profit care can't really provide affordable coverage,  and even with a trigger it will be needed to fill the need.

Moderates, independents -- they can't believe how scary nutty Republicans in power have become.  It's no longer a few screamers in polyester pants and funny hats.  It's no longer the fringe.  It's the official face of the party.

I'm hearing a lot of people turn away in utter disgust.

I was discussing the speech with an non-net friend of mine, going over the poll numbers and he said that when we were discussing the swing in Ind. support.
