The fact is, Cohen is popular with his primarily African-American constituents and he'll only lose if he stops being popular. It's that simple. Do a good job and people support you.

We ought to redistrict the 9th District to represent the whole Memphis area.  As it is now, it's a political ghetto.

That might ensure representation of the A-A community, but I don't think it does a smart job of tying the fortunes of the city to the fortunes of the suburbs.

jimreyn Tennessee. I think we hold 5 out of the 9 seats and they're all pretty safe. Too bad Tanner and Cooper are Blue Dog dickheads, though.

Democrats do well in Memphis and Shelby County.  The state went for McCain and our TN legislature went Republican last Fall - both houses turned over.  We lost the House by one and the Senate by 6? I think.  What that means: unless we take the legislature back in November 2010, the Republicans in this state will be redistricting our Congressional districts. We will lose AT LEAST 2 Democratic congressmen to redistricting.  The 9th District won't be lost, but the Republicans intend to take 2 others. One would think that Blue Dogs who are about to lose their seats would be a little more friendly to the powers-that-be in DC to get some help down here.

but when you use terms like "political ghetto" you are acting no better than any other baiter. Black voter aren't stupid just like the last primary they saw what was happening and Cohen won easily. Nothing is worse than changing the rules to try an ensure "someones favorite" wins.

The best way to stop this nonsense is for Cohen to keep beating these guys, changing the district boundaries only plays into the tactics of his opponents. Stop panicking the good guys are winning.

      •  9th district (0+ / 0-)

Except for 3 precincts (which in Memphis is a very tiny area), the 9th District IS the City of Memphis. Most of the suburbs are outside the city limits and therefore outside the 9th District.  The desired population of a congressional district just happens to be the city population.
