gives us 5:2 odds of holding on to marriage equality, but also says it's definitely going to be an issue of turnout.

I'm thrilled to know they have a very competent ground game in Maine -- and at the same time chilled by the fact that the haters have a built-in ground game called "church".

if the haters are the example, then clearly one must step on others to rise into the grace of Christ.

        •  It shouldn't be about Jesus. (3+ / 0-)

It should be about the U.S. Constitution which says we are all equal. The 14th amendement should be evoked in every court room and hearing on this issue in the U.S. This issue just highlights the ongoing issue of keeping religion out of state and vice versa. They know that civil marriage which is what us LGBT people deserve has nothing to do with religious marriage. The language in the Maine law which passed articulates as such.

my point being that what they do doesn't even agree with their own teachings.

I was raised Catholic, but have since become Agnostic and unaffiliated with organized religion. There is a liberation theology within Catholicism that stresses social justice and equality. Sadly, the church leadership has ignored such values in their contributions to prop 8 in CA and now question 1 in Maine. I've always said that people have a right to think what they would like, but it doesn't give them the right to deprive people of their civil rights. Racism, homophobia, and all the rest is terrible, but it is discrimination that results from it which is damaging.
