and so, unfortunately, are the dry cycles.

I was born and raised in L.A. and can recall day after day of gloomy, rainy weather in the 1950's and 1960's.  If there were Santa Ana winds, I don't recall them at all.

It is scarcely possible to conceive of the laws of motion if one looks at them from a tennis ball's point of view. (Brecht)

visiting my godparents in L.A. when I was littl'un, in 1964, in November. The air was bright and clean, sharp with coolness, but the sun shone most of the time we were there. No one mwntioned the Santa Anas.

--on and off (though always some of us...) since the early 1950s.\

I remember the Santa Anas in 1967 and '68.

But by November, they're over, largely. The condition comes up, but it's not nearly as hot,a nd the winds aren't as strong. It's responsible for the middle of winter warm spells that can reach into the 80s in January... long enough to trick the peach trees (etc) into thinking it's spring, and blow all the smog in L.A. out to sea. Coupled with some rain, you can suddenly see the L.A. Basin's staggering natural beauty... before it slides back into its smoggy wrapper.

We don't think/talk about the Santa Anas much out of season. Sort of like thinking about tax season...
