  •  US Chamber of Commerce is THE corporate lobby (9+ / 0-)

The biggest organization to lobby on behalf of big corporate interests and conversely lobby against the interests of individuals is the US CoC.

Back in the late 90s, the IRS ran a simple computer program that matched names with Social Security numbers provided by employers. If they didn't match, the employer was instructed to verify the Social Security number. Often all they had to do was ask to see the employee's Social Security card again. If the employee was using a fake card because they were illegally working in the US, they would simply leave and never be seen from again.

All this really did was make it harder for illegal immigrants to secure long term work. If word gets back to the home country that getting work in the US is hard, less people will illegally emigrate to the US. Seemed like a pretty good program. Implementation costs were pretty darn cheap. Legal US workers had more job opportunities.

Of course the US CoC hated it because it shrank the labor pool thus raising labor costs for its members. Republicans in Congress had the program killed. Thanks guys.

Sen. Kennedy chaired a hearing at which Lilly Ledbetter testified; the Chamber representative had all his facts wrong: he assumed that Lilly was a single mom being asked out on a date (in fact her National Guard officer husband died just last December). In fact, The Goodyear Tire senior manager was propositioning her to go to a hotel for the night. The harassment charge was later dropped from the suit, only because the perpetrator died.

    •  Oh it is so much more than that (2+ / 0-)

It is a pressure group that makes the NRA seem like small beer. This is huge.
