sometimes when there is smoke it is mostly or entirely due to a right-wing smoke machine... And when the smoke and noise and misinformation is too strong and there does not seem to be room for a better way out there is no practical alternative to having people take the fall even if there was nothing substantial to take a fall for... Once too much of the public has been conditioned and primed with an idea the fake molehills are then easily portrayed as dangerous mountains. This whole charade has been building for quite a while and ACORN was both an easy target and these days a harder one to defend after Rove types have had a free hand in re-defining them... and then after the setup, the build up, the final push is almost too easy...

In a parallel higher profile with a similar structured rightwing attack Van Jones had to quit... at his level those things are acted out in a quasi-"voluntary" way... for low level people in ACORN the sacrificial firing was involuntary... little people were fired to take the orchestrated heat off... probably reasonable grounds for termination were found (most companies do that easily all the time...) but probably what ever reasons given were not a big deal. I doubt that without all the hoopla and circus going on there would have been any need for terminations and whatever problems would have been dealt with internally with lesser sanctions...

It has been a very successful campaign taking advantage of human nature... we tend to have superficial pigeon holed meme established and what we think and believe after that is faulty..... Post Office employees go postal, Black people are.... ACORN is...... Any large group will have examples of all types of people in it... good, bad and ordinary... In the case of Post Office people freaking out and shooting a lot of people where they work... it has been shown that if anything they are less likely to than other workers... Why then do they turn up in the news...??

It is like the so-called Bermuda triangle... ships can disappear or sink mysteriously  anywhere but for some reason a story grew up about one area and things that did or did not happen there and then the story snowballed once it became part of the general awareness. As for Post offices ... they are everywhere.. and are one of the largest blocks of identifiable employees in the country... statistically it would be surprising if NO shootings happened... but when they do, the common identity makes them stand out from all the other workplace shooting/hostage situations that come and go in the news...

Acorn is a big mostly unknown entity that turns up in the news here and there and the Republicans know an easy target when they see it. They can paint any picture on the canvas and connect the dots that are already there with a misleading narrative and even pull stunts to pump the story more and give it legs.

    •  Fortunately Federal $ to Acorn (were) Minimal (0+ / 0-)

The Federal Government, in it's infinite generosity to the poor, as I commented in my article, has been $53 million since 1994, or about $2 million a year over 25 years... so much, such a welfare state, don't you think?

But ACORN has 400,000 members and almost all of its $100,000,000 a year budget comes straight "from the people" ...so the House's defunding is a PR sting and a cowardly cave-in and won't hurt much.

Damn, what kind of Democrats do we have in Congress, anyway? Utterly spineless (and rich, too).

      •  My congressman didn't vote to defund (0+ / 0-)

He is the either the richest or close to it, both my senators did, probably so as not to appear too close to an org that is in the crosshairs of Fox. I would like to see where the legislation ends up. Via another diary and common sense tells us you can't write a special law against ACORN, so if they vote to defund any org who has employees that have defrauded etc etc etc.

But in no way am I convinced about this instance. Not in denial just don't believe a video put out by a couple of right wing activists. I wouldn't believe it if it was by a left wing org known to play fast and furious with the truth either.

Submit all the unedited videos to a court of law and let the chips fall where they may. Convict someone and I'll assume they might well be guilty. Buncha videos about child prostitution and I'm not convinced any more than I am  that Glen Beck raped and murdered a young girl in 1990.
