now has a small bobcat population, and even a cougar now and then.  The attitude of people around here is for the most part absolutely disgusting, though, and I don't see how any of these animals could survive.
The rural population, particularly farmers, view any cat as a threat to their livestock or to themselves, and the poor creature is hunted down and killed.
Even housecats are deliberately run over and killed on the roads or shot on sight by men claiming they're "protecting the rabbit huntin'.
The smarter farmers, or those with larger operations, deliberately keep a number of housecats around the place to control the rodent population.  Poisons and traps for rodents are nothing compared to the ability of just a few housecats.
Makes my jaws hurt from gritting my teeth so hard when the occasional photo of a dead bobcat or cougar makes it into the local papers.
