    Enough, apparently to provide a breeding population but not to allow much increase. They're shy and reclusive, more so than bobcat/lynx even (which are very shy creatures), so they're hardly ever seen. But not a year goes by without reliable cougar sign.

    There are also cougar in central/upper New York State - they were deliberately re-introduced as a "natural" means of controlling the burgeoning deer population. (Did the Shenandoah cougars make their way south from New York?)
